The exhibit will be free and open to the public. To celebrate, the ACA will be open with special weekend hours: Saturday, January 10: 9:00 am – 4:30 pm Sunday, January 11: 9:00 am – 4:30 pm All students, faculty, staff, adjuncts, and alumni of Athens State University, Calhoun Community College, and the Alabama Center for the Arts were eligible to enter the juried show. Double-Crested Cormorant - Make it stand out Their preferred habitats are aquatic bodies big enough to support their mostly fish diet. They can usually be found near large waterways, on the refuge they gather in large numbers on the Tennessee River. They mainly eat fish which they catch by diving under water and chasing down while swimming. The tip of their bill is shaped like a hook, which is helpful in catching prey. They often employ a sit-and-wait method to capture prey but may be seen frantically chasing after them too. They tolerate the presence of people and may be seen in heavily developed areas as long as there is water with prey nearby. Fish make up the majority of their diet, but they will eat almost anything including salamanders, turtles, snakes, rodents, and other small birds. Great Blue Herons nest in large colonies called rookeries, often found in trees around 20 to 60 feet high. Often these birds are relatively quiet, but rookeries are quite noisy, and the sound of a Great Blue is described as a cranky squawk. The tower is located in a field near the Visitor Center. Chimney swifts build a nest of twigs and saliva stuck to a vertical surface, which is almost always a human-built structure, typically a chimney. Oswego Indians (Oswego River district near Lake Ontario, Canada), taught colonists to make tea with it, and likely how to use it for other conditions - indigenous Americans throughout the Eastern US, use(d) this plant to treat fever and chills, headaches, sore throats, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, insect bites, bronchial congestion and as a sedative to promote restful sleep. Less well-equipped bees (or wasps) otherwise need to chew holes near the base to access that nectar - what some call “robbing” from the flower, as those individuals take that flowers’ sweet reward without offering up their return gift of pollination. The species name, didyma, meaning “two parts” or “in pairs”, refers to the two stamens in each flower or the way its leaves are borne opposing one another along the stems. This is a terrific hummingbird and butterfly nectar plant with many named selections for the garden available in the trade. These vary in intensity and shade of color (red to purplish, purplish-blue) and greater resistance to powdery mildew, a common fungal infection of many plants. Perhaps surprisingly, this species has rather a long list of medicinal uses. Only milkweed plants provide the essential nutritional profile that young Monarchs require. John Tradescant explored Virginia in a series of trips (at least between 1628 and 1637) and brought back some of these species to England where they became aristocratic members in the gardens of Charles I and Charles II. The common name, Spiderwort, has several explanations. Some have it that the three petaled flowers (which can be lighter or darker blue/purple/reddish, even white) resemble a large squatting spider. Another attributes the property of the sap of the plant forming, when a stem is broken open, thin strands like those of a spider’s web. On sunny days the longevity of each flower is shorter; it is somewhat longer on gray days. This species is very, very similar to Tradescantia virginiana, though a little taller (2-4’) and probably more at home in full sun conditions. They emerge from their underground havens after the soil temperature reaches 64 degrees which means they have been around for about a month now. They only remain active above ground for about eight weeks so we will start to notice a gradual lessening of the population. Humans can eat cicadas.
