Robert Smith

About the presenter:

Robert is a wildlife biologist and outdoor photographer who began carrying a camera in the field over 35 years ago. He currently lives in coastal Mississippi and is the Coastal Program Coordinator for Wildlife Mississippi where he works with private landowners who host the federally endangered Mississippi sandhill crane. He has worked with and photographed a broad variety of southeastern flora and fauna. The pictures he initially started taking for documentation and personal enjoyment grew into seminars, magazine articles, fine artwork, commissioned shoots, and photography workshops. Robert has been active in camera clubs where he has lived, including serving as Vice President of the Carolinas’ Nature Photographers Association. Robert shares his knowledge about wildlife and its management with his technical understanding of cameras to help participants not only anticipate shots, but also be ready to maximize photographic opportunities presented. When you leave one of Robert’s workshops, he wants you to leave with 3 things: 1) some great shots from the trip, 2) a better understanding and appreciation of the animals and their ecosystem, and 3) new knowledge about using your camera that you can continue to use in other situations.

At the FOC 2024:

Avian Apertures or Feathers and f/stops: An Introduction to Bird Photography

Robert will share what he has learned photographing birds over the past 35 years and what has worked for him. This 2-hour presentation (with a break in the middle) will start off with a little about birds before venturing into bird photography ethics and bird photography locations. Then he will take a look at the exposure triangle and how that impacts how our bird images look. There will be a discussion on photography gear and bird photography techniques. The presentation will end with a quick summary and question-and-answer session.
