Batty About Bats with Vicky Smith!

  • Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center 3121 Visitors Center Road Decatur, AL, 35603 United States (map)

We’re so excited to welcome back Vicky Smith - The Bat Lady! Batty About Bats is an education program intended to educate and excite the audience about the importance of bats. It will increase the public’s knowledge about bats, their importance to the environment and the need for conservation of our natural resources.   The program gives important information about bats biology, their adaptations, their habitats, and their importance within the ecosystem in which they live.  The programs will address myths and untruths that are associated with bats.

The 1st part of the program will be inside and consist of a PowerPoint presentation with mounted specimens, life size silhouettes and the presentation of several species of live bats.  For the second part of the program, we will move outdoors for crafts and activities.  Grab a pair of wings and bat and make photos at the Bat Photo Booth. We will have a bat flyer contest for different age groups where kids and adults will compete with each other for small prizes. The other activities/crafts are self-led.  You can make a bat from your handprint, a bat shaped pencil topper and several other crafts. You will have a chance to learn   what the weight of a bat feels like in your hand and challenge yourself or friend to divide fake food sources in to lunch boxes.   We will also have some time to see the big brown bats eat and perhaps listen to them echolocate using ultrasonic devices to convert their calls into sounds we can hear.
